Girouard Family Archive Acadia, 1650 — to the present day  · V1.0

The Girouard Family of Acadia

François Girouard and his wife Jeanne Aucoin arrived in Port Royal, Acadia around 1650. They were among fewer than 100 founding families of French Acadia — the colony that would eventually stretch across what is now Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Their descendants number in the tens of thousands and are scattered across North America, from the Maritimes to Louisiana to Vermont.

This site brings together genealogical records, vital records from parish archives, and the history of the Acadian people. Use the tools below to find your connection to the family.

Acadian History

The Girouards are one of the founding families of Acadia. They built their lives on the salt marshes of the Bay of Fundy, mastered the dyke-building technology that made those marshes farmable, and raised families who intermarried with every other founding Acadian line.

In 1755, the British Deportation — le Grand Dérangement — scattered the Acadian people across the Atlantic world. Roughly 10,000 to 12,000 men, women, and children were forcibly removed from their lands. The Girouard descendants who survived rebuilt in New Brunswick, Quebec, Louisiana, and beyond. Today their descendants are found across North America.

This site builds on the original girouard.org, created by Mike Girouard, who assembled the first Girouard genealogy database and Acadian history collection online. The genealogical data and original documents he compiled remain available there. Our goal is to add searchable data and current research while his narrative history stands as the authoritative record he built.
